Go to where your file is saved, and right-click on top of it. You may notice it has an Excel-type icon next to the file name – however, I’d like you to open it in Notepad instead. It all looks a bit higgledy-piggledy, but trust me – Excel will know exactly what to do with it. So what that means is that to get from Sales Revenue to the 167,457 the Tab key has been pressed twice to get it to go across two columns. It will look like this – in this instance, a tab key press has been used to delimit the data: Sales Revenue 167,457 txt is a Plain Text file, and by default your computer will use a program called Notepad to open it.

To see these in action, download the two files here: grossprofit.txt and grossprofit.csv. The actual way your data is delimited is usually – most of the time – in one of two ways: a comma, or a tabkey press (that’s the one above your Caps Lock key).
So how does it know when one column ends and another begins? The separation of data into columns is known as delimiting. How Excel identifies data in different columnsĮxcel’s big, big difference from the other programs like Microsoft Word is that everything is in columns and rows. Sometimes you still get issues with data you’ve imported – that is, brought in from outside Excel – which is why I’ll show you a fab feature called Text to Columns a little further down.
